Wike’s aide tackles Atiku over Rivers LG poll statement

Published

on

Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his remarks on the recently concluded local government elections in Rivers State.

The elections, which were conducted across 23 local government areas (LGAs), ended with the All Progressives Congress (APC) securing victories in 20 LGAs, while the remaining three went to other political parties.

Many opposition voices, including Atiku, described the polls as flawed and undemocratic.

Reacting on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Olayinka mocked Atiku, calling him a “Permanent Presidential Runner.”

He argued that Atiku had no moral right to condemn the rivers election, pointing to Atiku’s past actions.

Olayinka reminded Nigerians of when Atiku tweeted about the killing of Deborah Samuel, a student murdered in Sokoto in 2022.

Atiku had condemned the killing but later deleted his tweet after facing backlash from some supporters in the North.

According to Olayinka, a man who could not “boldly and honestly” stand by his words in the face of such a serious issue as murder has no grounds to attack the conduct of an election.

He dismissed Atiku’s statement as “nonsensical nonsense.”

Olayinka urged Nigerians to ignore Atiku.

PDP power struggle deepens with emergence of Wike-backed executives

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has elected a new set of executives to lead its structure in the state.

The faction, led by Mr. Nosa Ogieva, emerged following a congress held in Benin City, the Edo State capital, where members aligned with Wike’s camp selected officers to oversee the party’s affairs at the state level.

Last week, another Edo PDP faction held its Congress and elected Tony Aziegbemi as its chairman.

Addressing the PDP delegates, SouthSouth Vice Chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, accused former governor Godwin Obaseki of causing decline in the fortunes of the party.

He said the poor performance of the party at the recently conducted by-election showed how unpopular PDP had become in Edo State.

He urged the delegates to elect people with capacity that would reawaken PDP.

He said: “Just yesterday (Saturday), I saw a statement issued by some funny characters saying they are advising party members not to attend this event. Are you not here?

“Those who don’t have any moral authority to speak on behalf of the party should keep their mouth shut.

“As we prepare to elect our executive, I will appeal to you to vote for those with capacity to lead this party, not those who will sell out, not those who will deny members their legitimate right.

“As members of our great party, there is no doubt that PDP is going through leadership crisis at the national level and several other states.

“Let us not deceive ourselves. For the first time in the history of our great party, we have elected governors of PDP and founding leaders, founding members of this party, leaving this party every day for one simple reason, failure of leadership.

“Elected governors are leaving. Elected senators are leaving. Elected members of the House are leaving. In Edo State, we know the root of our problem. We had a united party where everybody related with one another as brothers and sisters, until Godwin Obaseki joined our party.

“Obaseki destroyed our party. He sowed the seeds of discord, deep rooted seeds of discord in our party. He sinned against the party. He sinned against the people. He sinned against the state.

“Obaseki came into the party and destroyed everything that was good in the party. Today, our party’s umbrella is shattered, torn and we are here today to rebuild the party.

“What used to put us together as a family was destroyed by Obaseki. He fought every person except himself, and at the end, we are at a very disadvantaged position in the politics of Edo State.”

The new factional chairman promised to reunite the party, saying PDP would soon begin to win elections again in the state.

Security operatives seal off Akwa Ibom PDP office

Tension rose in Akwa Ibom on Wednesday as security operatives took control of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Secretariat in the state capital to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order.

The move followed mounting disputes over the alleged dissolution of the State Working Committee (SWC) by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). Conflicting claims surrounding the leadership tussle have fueled uncertainty, prompting security agencies to step in as a precautionary measure.

The National Publicity Secretary of PDP Debo Ologunagba dissolved the state exco and appointing a 31-member caretaker committee.

But the National Secretary of the party Senator Samuel Anyanwu issued a counter statement, declaring there was no NWC meeting where such decision was taken.

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom state Àniekan Akpan described the purported sack of his executive by the National Working Committee of the party(NWC) as illegal.

He declared the state exco as intact till, stating they will serve out the four-year tenure which they were elected, adding that divisive elements within the party are working hard to kill the PDP in the state.

He told reporters on Thursday: “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State wishes to address a recent wave of misinformation circulating on social media platforms, particularly on Facebook, claiming the dissolution of our duly elected State Executive Committee (Exco). We categorically state that these reports are not only false but also unconstitutional”.

Akpan, who was surrounded by all the purportedly sacked exco members, explained the PDP is governed by the rule of law and guided by the party constitution adding that the Exco members were elected in a well constituted state Congress for a fix term of 4 years .

Akpan further explained that some of the Exco members were falsely listed in the new Caretaker Committee without their consent.

He said the NWC that allegedly sacked them never had any formal meeting before they settled on the such decision adding that the PDP National Secretary has issued a press statement in that regard .

Akpan appealed to party members , supporters and general public to disregard the false report and remain committed to the lawful leadership of the party in Akwa Ibom state .

The party chairman said he would continue to be identified with Governor Umo Eno as the governor is not only the leader of APC but leading entire state across party lines.

” The party can not separate us from Governor Umo Eno . He is the governor for all . Nobody can say we have engaged in anti party by hobnobbing with the Governor,” he said.

Nkanu youth warn leaders against early political endorsement

Published

Youths under the umbrella of the Nkanu Youths Organization (NYO) in Enugu State have sounded a note of caution to political leaders and interest groups, urging them to steer clear of early endorsements ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the group, while the Nkanu zone is blessed with capable leaders who can represent the people effectively, premature endorsements only fuel division and shift focus away from good governance.

Speaking at a press conference in Enugu on Friday, the President of NYO, Comrade Dika David, urged stakeholders to focus on transparency, accountability, and good governance rather than early politicking.

He stressed that political endorsements must reflect genuine concern for the welfare of the people, not mere opportunism.

“Enugu State cannot attain the vision of a $30 billion GDP by stifling SMEs and reducing the purchasing power of the people through multiple taxation. Ndi Enugu are suffering silently, and the government must show empathy,” he said.

While acknowledging the right of individuals and groups to support leaders of their choice, the NYO President insisted that “endorsements at this stage are premature. What the people need right now is good governance, inclusive policies, and the actual delivery of democracy dividends.”

The group also highlighted prominent figures from the zone such as Chief Everest Nnaji, Chief Uche Nnaji, and Chief Samson Chukwu Nnamani, describing them as competent leaders who could equally steer the affairs of the state when the time comes.

Beyond politics, NYO stressed the importance of youth empowerment and human capital development, urging the government to prioritize capacity-building programmes alongside infrastructure.

“As the next generation of leaders, we are determined to play a decisive role in shaping the Enugu of tomorrow. Anything done for us without us is completely against us. Youths are not only the leaders of tomorrow; we are also stakeholders of today,” the group declared.

NYO further called on young people across Enugu State to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise, noting that the power to shape the future lies in their active participation in governance.
