Ronaldo joins elite list after matching qualifying goal record

Published

on

Cristiano Ronaldo has once again written his name in the history books after matching the all-time goalscoring record in World Cup qualifying.

The Portuguese superstar found the back of the net as Portugal secured a narrow victory over Hungary in their 2026 World Cup qualifier. The goal was his 39th in World Cup qualifying matches, drawing him level with Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz.

With this milestone, Ronaldo now sits three goals ahead of Lionel Messi, further underlining his legendary status in world football.

Ronaldo, 40, extended his international record to 141 goals in 223 appearances for Portugal, the most by any male player for the country.

His goal at the Puskas Arena on Tuesday came from the penalty spot in the 58th minute after Hungary forward Barnabas Varga had a 21st-minute opener cancelled out by Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva 15 minutes later.

Varga equalised in the 84th minute and the hosts looked set for a point, but Joao Cancelo fired home just two minutes later to earn a dramatic victory for Roberto Martinez’s side.

Ronaldo also scored twice in Portugal’s 5-0 win over Armenia on Saturday, leaving them top of Group F with six points from the opening two matches. Hungary are third on one point alongside the Republic of Ireland, who suffered a 2-1 setback in Armenia.

West Ham, Leeds, Sunderland fall in EFL cup shockers

Published

on

Wolverhampton Wanderers staged a dramatic late comeback to defeat West Ham United 3-2 and book their place in the third round of the English Football League (EFL) Cup.

Super-sub Jorgen Strand Larsen was the hero of the night at Molineux, scoring twice in the space of two minutes after coming off the bench in the 73rd minute. His goals in the 82nd and 84th minutes overturned West Ham’s 2-1 lead and sealed an emphatic win for Wolves.

Lucas Paqueta had headed the visitors in front on 63 minutes, after Rodrigo Gomes had netted Wolves’ first goal of the season just before halftime.

Tomas Soucek equalised for West Ham in the 50th minute, following Hwang Hee-chan’s missed penalty for Wolves that hit the post earlier in the match.

The clash between the league’s bottom two teams added more pressure on West Ham boss Graham Potter, whose side have suffered heavy league defeats to Chelsea and Sunderland.

Promoted Leeds United were knocked out on penalties by Championship side Sheffield Wednesday after a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough, losing the shootout 3-0.

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans boycotted the match in protest at the club’s Thai ownership, and they watched from afar as their side advanced in dramatic fashion.

U.S. goalkeeper Ethan Horvath was the hero for Wednesday, saving two penalties and keeping a clean sheet in the shootout on his debut after joining the club on loan.

“I’ve only been here a few days and had to learn 10 new names.

“Then another 10 in this game. I’m glad I could help,” Horvath said at post-match.

Sunderland also crashed out on penalties, losing 6-5 to third-tier Huddersfield Town, after a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.

Brentford beat Bournemouth 2-0 in the only other all-Premier League tie of the night, with goals from Fabio Carvalho and Igor Thiago securing victory on the South Coast.

Brentford’s record signing Dango Ouattara featured as a substitute against former club Bournemouth, days after scoring on his league debut.

At Turf Moor, Burnley edged Championship side Derby County 2-1, with Oliver Sonne grabbing a stoppage-time winner for the much-changed Premier League outfit.

Wrexham earned a dramatic 3-2 win at Preston North End, with Kieffer Moore scoring in stoppage time after the hosts twice took the lead in the second-tier encounter.

Boniface, 10 other players who failed medicals

Published

on

Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has found himself in the spotlight again after reports from Germany revealed that his proposed move to AC Milan fell through due to fitness concerns.

According to BILD, the Bayer Leverkusen forward underwent four separate medical tests in Italy, but the Serie A giants decided to withdraw from the deal. Boniface has since returned to Germany, sparking fresh debate about his future.

However, Boniface is not alone. Through football history, several world-class players have faced the same challenge — seeing transfers collapse at the medical stage. Yet, many of them went on to build remarkable careers.

Here are 10 famous footballers who failed medicals but still rose to greatness.

1. John Hartson

Year: 2000

Clubs involved: Tottenham, Rangers, Charlton

Reason: Chronic knee issues

Outcome: Hartson’s fragile knee led to multiple failed transfers in 2000. The consistent injury concerns scared off several clubs.

2. Hakim Ziyech

Years: 2023–2024

Club: Al-Nassr

Reason: Knee problems

Outcome: Ziyech’s transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr fell through not once but twice due to persistent knee issues identified during medicals.

3. Demba Ba

Year: 2011

Club: Stoke City

Reason: Underlying long-term injury risk

Outcome: Stoke canceled the deal citing potential long-term damage. Ba later went on to have a solid Premier League career with West Ham and Newcastle.

4. Patrick Schick

Year: 2017

Club: Juventus

Reason: Undisclosed health concerns

Outcome: Schick failed two separate medicals at Juventus, forcing the club to back out. He later signed for Roma instead.

5. Victor Boniface

Year: 2025

Club: AC Milan

Reason: Undisclosed

Outcome: The move was surprisingly called off after a failed medical, though no specific reason has been publicly confirmed.

6. Kurt Zouma

Year: 2024

Club: Shabab Al-Ahli (UAE)

Reason: Unhealed injuries

Outcome: The center-back’s move was canceled after doctors flagged lingering issues from past injuries.

7. Nicolas Jackson

Year: 2023

Club: Bournemouth

Reason: Hamstring problem

Outcome: Bournemouth pulled the plug on the deal after concerns about a hamstring injury. Jackson later joined Chelsea after recovery.

8. Samuel Umtiti

Year: 2022

Club: Rennes

Reason: Undisclosed

Outcome: The French defender’s transfer was derailed after a failed medical. Though the details remain unknown, Umtiti had long been plagued by knee injuries.

9. Gabriel Milito

Year: 2003

Reason: Knee injury

Outcome: Real Madrid doctors flagged incomplete recovery from a past knee issue. The transfer was canceled, though Milito later had a successful career elsewhere.

10. Victor Valdés

Year: 2014

Club: AS Monaco

Reason: Cruciate ligament injury

Outcome: Valdés was nearing a move to Monaco when the deal fell apart due to his ACL injury. He eventually joined Manchester United.

11. Marko Arnautović

Year: 2009

Club: Chelsea

Reason: Foot problem

Outcome: Chelsea backed out of a potential signing, but Arnautović later moved to Inter Milan after a successful follow-up medical.
